Summer Camp Opens With A Splash!

Wet Willie Water Slide at Camp T. Brady Saunders
opens with a splash!

New to camp this year is a 100 foot water slide that dumps into the lake.  The starting platform is more than 30 feet above the sandy beach area of the waterfront.  This is a great new feature for camp, the Scouts are loving it!  The iceberg has also returned to the waterfront.

Program Planning Materials Available Online

This summer, all units need to plan their programs for the coming school year.  If you missed Super Saturday, the council calendar and program planning materials can be found on the council website at http://hovc.org/resources/program-planning/.  Contact your unit commissioner or district executive if you need help.

Albright Scout Reservation is a great site for weekend camping.  Situated on 568 acres on Lake Chesdin, it is close and offers three types of camping areas all at NO COST!  It has six traditional campsites for car camping each with a shelter, table and latrine nearby.  Three sites near the lake offer more of a wilderness experience.  There is also a "leave no trace" area and a short backpack trail for a shakedown experience.

In addition there are two picnic pavilions and a chapel area for unit activities!  Sites and facilities are free to Heart of Virginia Council units and reservations can be made online at http://hovc.org/camps/albright/.

Camp Cards

2013 Camp Card Sale

The 2013 Camp Card Sale has wrapped up and it was very successful for many of our “pilot” units.  Over $40,000 worth of commissions were given out to the 90 units who participated in our first ever sale.  Those units and Scouts will use that money to send kids to camp and help pay for other Scouting activities.  In addition to that, over $20,000 worth of funds were raised for camp improvements at Camp T. Brady Saunders and Cub Adventure Camp.

We also have plenty of Camp Cards left for any units who would like to sell throughout the summer with a new deadline of payment and returning cards being August 1st.  The same commission structure still applies.  Please see http://hovc.org/campcards/ for all details and email Josh Hendrix at josh.hendrix@scouting.org if you would like to participate.

The Heart of Virginia Council and the James River Association are teaming up to rid the James River of tires.  Troops are encouraged to participate and take a short stretch between Scottsville and the Benjamin Harrison Bridge to pull tires.  Bridgestone Tires will provide trucks at designated collection points.  This will be a great way for your Scouts to get to know the James River better and help keep it clean.  To learn more go to:  http://www.doubleknot.com/event/1366215

July

There will be no meetings of the District for the month of July.

New Boys of  Summer

Summer is a time of relaxation, bonding with family, and new adventures.  However, there is never a bad time to join Scouting.  During the month of May and June, a few units in our District took the initiative to host various recruitments for new Cubs, Scouts, or Venturers.  It’s estimated that these efforts could bring in as many as 30 new youth into our programs.  Boys and parents will be interested in your units summer activities, especially because they are so affordable compared to the total cost of family vacations.  July is a break from district meetings in order to focus fully on camps, or simply to rest and regroup.  When your unit leader comes in to the Scout Shop to collect patches or craft or uniform items, make sure any new applications come in with that person.  Our district has done steady work in finance, and now we need to do an equally thorough job in attracting new boys and being diligent in our paperwork (both with units and the Council!).  Your unit’s summer activities will be the best advertising possible through August and into the Fall.  Keep up the great work!

Finance

Nope, we are not finished yet!  In the style of Jerry Lewis, our fellow volunteers have been calling to bring in those donations critical to keeping the Scouting program alive.  At the time of this writing, we are close to 90% of our $160,000 goal.  It is a tremendous push to raise that final amount, but with your help, we can do it!  Please consider increasing your gift this year, or encouraging others to give.  It’s the only way to retain our dominance in the Council for another year!

Popcorn

During your unit’s yearly planning session, fundraising will undoubtedly be an important topic.  How will your unit pay for all the fun activities you have planned?  The Council hopes that you will consider Trail's-End popcorn once again.  Our district has recruited a new District Kernel, Cindy Stock, from Pack 836.  She brings a wealth of experience and enthusiasm to the popcorn sale, and we would highly encourage you to work with her throughout the campaign so as to bring maximum success towards your fundraising objectives.  Cindy can be reached at stock925@verizon.net.

For those of you already committed to selling popcorn, please check the information readily available through the Council’s website.  Our District Explosion will likely be on Tuesday, August 27th, but the location has yet to be determined.  There will also be no gift cards this year, just the new prize structure.  There will be no additional commission, either, only the prize structure.  What’s so great about that?  Some really cool prizes!!!

Summer Camps

Leaders, your Senior District Executive wants to meet with you during the summer.  He might not get to see all of you, but look for him in uniform, tracking silently over the camp trails to join your troop/pack for a brief time at Brady Saunders or Cub Adventure Camp.  This is nothing formal, just checking in to listen and learn.

Scout Shop Notes

Scout Shop Notes

Stop and see all the fun stuff we have in stock!!!  We have great gifts for Scouts and leaders!

100th anniversary items are arriving in the Scout Shop.   New t-shirts and collector council shoulder patches are in.

Pack and Troop leaders must tell new Scouts which items and uniform parts to purchase.  With almost 500 units in council, the Scout Shop does not know what individual units require or provide.

Per National BSA policy: When purchasing rank and or merit badges, advancement reports must be turned in at time of purchase, including Bobcat and Scout.  To purchase replacement patches, you must have the rank card, merit badge or blue card or copy of the Scout's record.

All returns must be made within 30 days, with receipt, and items in original condition.

Special event and dated patches have a limited return period.  Please check with the Scout Shop for details.

For orders sent to the Scout Shop, please allow 1-2 business days for processing.  If you email your order, to ensure we receive it, please use the address scoutshop@scouting.org.
