The Patrick Henry Public Speaking Program:


  • The program will be held at Short Pump Middle School in Henrico County.


  • Public Speaking: offered January 21st (only)  Communications: January 21st  & 28th


  • Scouts must have earned their Public Speaking merit badge to participate in the Communications merit badge program.


  • Recommended minimum age for Public Speaking Program is 12 years old. Request for exceptions must be approved in advance of registering for class.


  • Scouts attending the second year will work on the Communications merit badge.  It will continue to take place over both Saturdays.  These dates again are January 21st and 28th.


  • Sign in will begin promptly at 8:00 a.m.  Program begins promptly at 8:30 a.m.


  • Please remember that if your unit is sending more than five scouts to the program; consider providing a merit badge counselor or someone to assist with registration on the 21st.


  • If your scouts are not registered by January 14th, they are not guaranteed a spot to participate in the program. 


  • Registration will end by the close of business (5:00 p.m.) on Saturday, January 14th. Class size is limited. This is to ensure quality instructors and manage class size.

If there are parents who are teachers, lawyers, salesmen, or in other professions that focus on communication skills, they are perfect candidates for Instructors.  Training for staff volunteers is provided before the program starts in January.  Please contact Susan Loden ( if you would like to assist with Public Speaking or Greg Blake ( if you would like to assist with Communications.

Cancellation Policy
In the case of death of an immediate family member, sickness or injury, or a military transfer we will refund all monies paid for Scouts and/or leaders of fees paid. The Council must be informed by February 6, 2017 because of the nature of the event. You must notify us by sending an email to no later than February 6, 2017. Requests received after February 6, 2017 will not be considered. The Heart of Virginia Council strives to provide the very best programs possible. We enter into obligations with our staff and vendors several months before the event. Cancellations during the week of the event undermine our ability to provide our quality program. Reasons such as vacation schedules, school events, and last minute changes of mind are not acceptable reasons for refunds. Scouts who leave during the event will not receive a refund.
