Description:   The Central Virginia Orienteering Club (CVOC) is presenting an orienteering weekend in conjunction with Albright Scout Camp.  CVOC members, Scouts and the public are welcome.  No experience is necessary and instruction relative to compass and map basics can be provided.

The event is primarily directed at Scouts that need to complete a one mile orienteering course, requiring measuring height and/or distance, for First Class rank; and those Scouts that want to complete requirements 1 through 7a,b of the Orienteering merit badge.  The merit badge will be instructed as “Teach and Test”, where the Scout will be exposed to concepts and then have to explain or demonstrate the concepts as appropriate.  Participants will have the opportunity to navigate orienteering courses consisting of approximately 8 to 16 control points, depending on the level of difficulty.

Prerequisites:  All Scouts should have a compass, whistle and water while on a course.  Scouts attending the merit badge workshop should prepare by reviewing Chapter 11 of the Scout Handbook (and bring their handbook for reference) and if possible the Orienteering merit badge book.  Scouts wanting credit for the merit badge requirements must bring a “blue card”.   An orienteering compass is strongly recommended, although we will have some to loan.  Copies of the Orienteering merit badge worksheet (Meritbadge.org) or notebook and pencil might be helpful.
